Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority cut interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the count of employment gains added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication when the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are going up, although slowly. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
